IBM Mobile Connections Now Free

IBM sells a social media and community building tool that competes with Socialtext and Jive and combines wikis, social streams, discussion forums and integrates with IBM's Sametime for presence/IM communications. It is called Connections and today IBM announced that mobile versions of Connections are free to download.

The free mobile versions are available on the AndroidiOS and Blackberry phones through the links on their respective app stores. They connect to either a Windows or Linux Connector server. But wait, there is more. There are also desktop versions.

IBM announced that it has beefed up the mobile versions with some bonus features, and of course they differ depending on the phone you are using:
  • Partial wipe for Apple iOS devices, This is new and allows an IT administrator to wipe only the company data from the device while preserving a worker's personal data. There are many other MDM products that offer this feature, it is nice to see IBM promoting this too.
  • Click-to-call from Android OS device calendar. Available in beta now, Lotus Notes Traveler will allow IBM email users to call people listed in their calendar views with just one click.
  • Online meeting support for BlackBerry only, OSv6 is required for this client.
IBM is probably one of the biggest users of the product.

How Many People Actually Use Twitter?

Here's a shocker for you: Newt Gingrich probably didn't pad his Twitter follower list with fictitious accounts. And, to make matters weirder, the reason that people thought that he had is the same reason why even Twitter isn't sure how many users it actually has: inactive users.

(MORE: Report: 92% of Newt Gingrich's Twitter Followers Aren't Real)

According to Mashable's investigation into Gingrich's Twitter followers, his campaign's explanation that why so many followers' accounts were inactive was that the majority of them were once genuine accounts that started to follow him during a period of "Suggested User promotion" back in 2009-2010 turned out to be true. Apparently the high level of drop-off is what prompted Twitter's VP of International Strategy to underestimate the number of the company's registered users by more than 100 million earlier this year.

In April, Katie Stanton—Twitter's VP of International Strategy—told the Guardian Activate summit that the site has 200 million registered accounts, just before its 300 millionth user signed up. That number is now closer to 360 million sign-ups. According to Twitter, there are around 460,000 sign-ups per day. The discrepancy may come when trying to gauge whether or not users are considered active,

According to Business Insider, there are actually less than 21 million active users on Twitter, but that's working from a very specific definition of "active" that demands more than 30 feeds being followed. Assuming that some Twitter users are more selective—and I don't think that's a stretch to assume, to be honest—then the math gets fuzzier.

The only people who know for sure how many Twitter users are actually actively on the site work for Twitter, and they're not talking... Well, aside from Ms. Stanton. So maybe 200 million should be considered the new baseline for Twitter estimates—until we know anything more, of course.

Smartphone Evolution Over the Last 40 Years

It has only been recently that people have been able to read and write on the Web with their mobile devices. The evolution to where phones are now smart, mobile and ubiquitous has been a train long in transit. The infographic below from Product Development Technologies shows that evolution through major product lines and pop culture. Before the advent of the smartphone, what did you think was the coolest mobile innovation of the last 40 years?
Personally, I was partial to the Motorola Dynatac 8000X. I never owned one, but I was a big fan of Saved By The Bell and Zack Morris. Those of an earlier generation may have been partial to the Get Smart shoe phone, which, admittedly, still seems like a cool idea. Before smartphones started to become ever larger devices, Ben Stiller in Zoolander lampooned the popularity of the shrinking smartphone.
It is interesting to see how phones went from big, clunky devices (Martin Cooper's original mobile phone) to sleek and thin voice machines (the Motorola Razr) and then again to large form factors (the HTC Evo, for instance). It is likely that we will see this trend play out within the smartphone era itself. The evolution within the last several years is clear. Lay an original iPhone next to an iPhone 4 and note the differences.

Half of U.S. Adults Use Social Networking Sites

For the first time ever, 50% of all American adults are using social networking sites, according to new data from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
Of active Internet users in particular, 65% are social networking users, a number that continues to climb. To put things in perspective, only 29% of adult American Internet users reported using social networking tools in 2008.
Unsurprisingly, social media usage is even higher among Americans under 30 years old, 61% of whom use sites like Facebook on a daily basis. It's not just younger people who are using the Internet to connect with friends, family and colleagues. The rate at which older people are using the social Web continues to grow as well.
Although the report doesn't break down usage by site, it's safe to assume that the majority of people are partial to Facebook, which has 750 million users worldwide and recently surpassed 1 trillion pageviews in a single month. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he expects the site to reach 1 billion users before long.

Virtual Computer's NxTop Creates More Potent Virtual Desktops Than VDI

.
virtualcomputer150.pngVirtual Computer is trying to make desktop virtualization easy by having centralized management with distributed execution so you can deploy hundreds if not thousands of VMs. The difference is that the VMs are run on the endpoint devices, and cuts costs and infrastructure requirements. The NxTop platform, as it is called, has its own bare metal hypervisor that sits on the desktop and manages the various VMs.
The new version 4 has over 50 enhancements. The most notable is a centralized storage option, where the VMs need to stay inside the datacenter and boot off a storage array, like a regular VDI solution but without the need for a specialized VDI network and storage array. Also you can deploy their management solution on both vSphere or Citrix Xen in addition to their existing Hyper-V support. There are added policies to support managed access to port controls and faster access to Windows with simplified logins and user management. Using their solution, you also can create large collections of shared computers for training classes for example.
NxTop's VM collection is actually stored as VHDs, the same format that Microsoft Hyper-V uses. This makes it easier to convert existing VMware VMDK disk images over to its collection.
Virtual Computer has long had the ability to lockout users if a computer is stolen and also a remote kill switch feature for further protection. The next time a stolen laptop sees the Internet, it's hard drive will be wiped clean.
Virtual Computer will be showing the latest version at the VMworld show in Vegas this week. Pricing is for $160 per machine plus $40 annual maintenance.

Typhoon drenches Taiwan after claiming lives in the Philippines

Dawu, Taiwan (CNN) -- Typhoon Nanmadol pounded Taiwan with heavy rains Monday before it was downgraded to a tropical storm and headed toward China.
The storm made landfall in the southern portion of Taiwan about 3 a.m. Monday, dousing some areas with up to 300 mm (11 inches) of rain, officials said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, although officials closed several highways in the landslide-prone region.
Nanmadol reached Taiwan after pummeling the Philippines over the weekend. By Monday, the death toll in the Philippines had climbed to 12.

Among them were two children who died when Nanmadol, known locally as Mina, triggered a landslide in northern Philippines on Saturday, authorities said.
The landslide buried the victims in Pangasinan province, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Ten others were killed in different incidents, 21 people were injured, and nine remain missing, the council said in a statement Monday.
